Side A: Mogao Grottoes Nine-Story Pagoda & Maitreya Buddha
This side draws inspiration fromCave 96 of the Mogao Grottoes (Dunhuang, China), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The towering Nine-Story Pagoda, built during the Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE), houses a 35.5-meter-tall clay statue of Maitreya Buddha(the Future Buddha). With its vermilion-painted wooden facade and tiered eaves, the pagoda symbolizes imperial devotion and the fusion of Chinese and Central Asian Buddhist art. Maitreya’s serene expression and hand gestures (mudras) reflect themes of hope, compassion, and humanity’s pursuit of enlightenment.

Side B: Yungang Grottoes Giant Buddha
This side features the iconic Seated Buddha from Cave 20 of the Yungang Grottoes (Datong, China), a masterpiece of Northern Wei Dynasty (460–494 CE) Buddhist sculpture. Carved directly into sandstone cliffs, this 13.7-meter-tall Buddha embodies the Gandhara artistic influence(blending Indian and Hellenistic styles) with Chinese aesthetic sensibilities. The statue’s elongated facial features, draped monastic robes, and meditative posture symbolize wisdom, tranquility, and the spread of Buddhism along the Silk Road. As one of China’s earliest large-scale stone Buddhas, it represents the zenith of early Chinese Buddhist art.
